FIAC

Starting yesterday and on through Sunday is the FIAC art fair. The Grand Palais plays host to the more blue chip galleries such as Gagosian, Galerie Lelong and Paula Cooper while the cour carre shows galleries that are more "edgy" with perhaps a younger age group of artists. I went to the opening at the Louvre last night and really do not have much exciting to report--it is an art fair after all and tends to make one without a large pocket of money to spend, feel dizzy and overwhelmed. Good booths at Galerie Hussenot and Lombard Freid, as well several funky galleries from Amsterdam and Brussels. www.fiac.com

Several works made me very very mad. Such as...the series of framed hotel stationery sheets by French artist Mathieu Laurette. See these? He signed his name above the statement : Ju suis un artiste. (Also in English and Italian). The dealer explained sincerely: He's been working on this series since 1989. Oh?? Wow that's a very long time. How much are they? 1800 euros. For the whole group? For the six? No, for each one. Hey, you know me, I'm all for "nothing." And I'm a serious fan of Duchamp. But whoa, the bigger the con the higher the price. This isn't even original. Methinks the genius is in the sale. I told the dealer, Well if you sell them he can finally pay his hotel bill. Anyway, both the Cour Carré du Louvre and the Grand Palais were packed (Saturday). So there must be a show in town...

Should be "Je suis un artiste..." but I kind of like "Ju suis un artiste." Sounds more real.
